Commercial Builder of the Year

Michael Downey started working for his father M.D. Downey Contractor upon graduating Madisonville North Hopkins High School in 1978. He started his own business, Professional Construction in 1985, which began doing room additions and remodeling. After a few years we started moving into new home construction. In 1992 we incorporated the business and changed the name to Downey Professional Construction. Downey Construction has built several house in Country Club, Lake Ridge Estates and Hopkins County. Michael has been the Hopkins County Home Builder for 17 years and also served as Hopkins County Home Builders President in 1997 and 1998. Michael is currently serving on the executive committee for the HBAK. Downey Construction has won the Hopkins County Builder of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Messengers Readers Choice Awards in 1999, 2004, 2006 and 2007. President’s award from the Home Builders Association of Kentucky for New Home Design (2801 to 3300 sq. ft.) in 2004. Since then we have moved more toward commercial construction with restaurants, doctor’s offices, real estate offices and other commercial properties and won Hopkins County Commercial Builder of the year 2010. We currently still do some residential housing. We have also added to the management end of the business with Kent Withrow as project manager in 2009, Jack Allison and Gary (Julio) Clark as construction superintendants and David Downey will be coming this year as a construction superintendant. Michael currently lives in Madisonville with his wife Leigh. His son Joseph Downey, 27, is working and learning about the construction business.
